One of the factors to consider when job hunting is your CV. CV formats vary widely from country to country, if you want your job application to be taken seriously, your CV needs to follow the right layout.
Step 1 - Including a photograph
As a recruitment agency we are often asked if job seekers should include a photograph on their CV. We would highly recommend that you do include a photo on your CV, many employers are of the opinion that a CV with a photograph provides a more complete representation of the application and allows them to make connection with a person in a way that is easier than just scanning words on paper. However this is a personal preference and optional.
Step 2 - Include a summary on your CV
First ensure to include your name on your CV. Remember in include a summary statement. The focus on this section should be to inform the reader in a clear and concise manner what it is your have to offer the company. Use this space to inform the potential employer of your expertise and skills. Demonstrate what makes you unique from others applying for the same role.
Step 3 - Include personal information
We cannot stress this enough, I cannot tell you how often persons have sent their CV with no contact information. How are we supposed to contact you?
Ensure that you include the following:
- Area of residence ( Not your full address, just the suburb)
- Date of birth ( Again not your full ID number, protect your personal information)
- Contact number ( Extremely important)
- Email address LinkedIn profile link and other social media links ( These are optional)
- Other information which may be useful to include, if a job requires you to drive you will probably want to assure the reader that you have a valid drivers license and reliable transport.
- Web and Graphic designers may want to include a link to their online profiles.
Step 4 - Include your employment history
Include the company names where you have previous worked Include the duration of employment (May 2009 - May 2019) List your previous jobs in chronological order from the most recent employment first to the last. Be factually correct and highlight your achievements and include your reasons for leaving.
Step 5 - Include the education section
The essential information to include in the education section is your degree (s) or diplomas, certifications etc and the high school which you attended
Step 6 - Include professional skills and proficiency
Include a list of your professional skills and proficiency as your computer literacy remember to include basics like MS office suite as well as any specialized packages such as pastel, Ghost convey etc
Step 7 - Include references In the reference section
it is essential to include details of persons whom you directly reported to Company Referee designation Referee name Contact Number ( Landline numbers are always preferred) Wishing you all the success in your job search!
